Georges Gounaropoulos s’est int\u00e9ress\u00e9 \u00e0 la portraiture tout au long de sa\ncarri\u00e8re artistique. Ses portraits repr\u00e9sentent des membres de sa famille, des\namis et des connaissances, des personnalit\u00e9s \u00e9minentes de la bourgeoisie\ngrecque et des personnalit\u00e9s distingu\u00e9es de son temps, comme Eleftherios\nVenizelos et l’armateur Leonidas Embiricos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans ses nombreux portraits, le peintre, bien qu’il soit rest\u00e9 fid\u00e8le \u00e0 son langage stylistique actuel, a toujours rendu avec une grande exactitude les traits physionomiques du mod\u00e8le. Plusieurs entre ceux qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 peints par l’artiste, ont mentionn\u00e9 que Gounaropoulos avait l\u2019aptitude de capturer leur figure en tr\u00e8s peu de temps et la compl\u00e9ter plus tard, sans photographie. Cependant, outre la pr\u00e9cision ext\u00e9rieure, les portraits de Gounaropoulos se distinguent \u00e9galement par leur perspicacit\u00e9 sur le plan psychologique, et le rendu du monde int\u00e9rieur des personnes qu’ils repr\u00e9sentent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le portrait de sa femme, Marika Gounaropoulou, date des premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de leur connaissance, lorsque le peintre \u00e9tait en visite en Gr\u00e8ce depuis Paris o\u00f9 il s\u2019\u00e9tait install\u00e9. Marika \u00e9merge brillante, \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9e et en m\u00eame temps palpable, \u00e0 travers une profondeur sombre et ind\u00e9finie. Sa tenue rappelle un costume traditionnel grec et son visage juv\u00e9nile, aux traits d\u00e9licats, est encadr\u00e9 par deux longues tresses.
