Jiří Slíva – Café DADA
The G. Gounaropoulos Museum and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Athens present a printmaking exhibition by the Czech artist Jiří Slíva. The exhibition Jiří Slíva – Café DADA is part of the 3d Athens Print Fest.
Jiří Slíva, born in 1947 in Pilsen, lives and works in Prague. He works in printmaking, cartooning and illustration. The exhibition presents thirty-three of his works, colour lithographs and etchings, from the last two decades. Slíva draws his inspiration, among others, from the Dada art movement which started in Zurich in 1916 as a reaction to the absurdity and brutality of the First World War, and in 2016 celebrates its 100th anniversary. Like the Dadaists, the artist combines logically unrelated subjects and ideas to create paradoxical, yet insightful, compositions. His themes include love, music, wine and the imaginary café – a place where the oddest things can happen.
Opening: Thursday 10 March 2016 at 19:30
Jiří Slíva will attend the official opening.
