Horse’s head on rocks
1973 | oil on canvas
123 x 171 cm

The horse is one of Gounaropoulos’s favorite themes. A symbol of strength and independence, associated since antiquity with the sun and the intellect, the horse also represents instinctive urges, thus creating a bridge between the earth and the sky.

In the painting Horse’s head on rocks, the artist depicts a horse rising from the depths of an imposing rocky landscape towards an undefined light, which seems to absorb and dematerialise it.
