A hall dedicated to Giorgos Gounaropoulos in the Sozopol Municipal Art Gallery

On Saturday, June 3, a special hall dedicated to Giorgos Gounaropoulos will be inaugurated in the Sozopol Municipal Art Gallery, in Bulgaria, to permanently house a generous donation by the artist’s granddaughters, Maria and Despoina Gounaropoulos, to the municipality of Sozopol. The donation includes nine paintings, preparatory drawings, and some of the painter’s personal items.

The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by the presentation of a special publication focusing on the painter’s relationship with Sozopol, written by Art Historian Elisaveta Stantcheva. On the same day, a statue of Gounaropoulos by the Bulgarian sculptor Mitko Galabov will be unveiled in the old town of Sozopol.

The G. Gounaropoulos Museum participates in the celebrations for the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution of 1821. Therefore, it has joined the “Greece 2021” national initiative for free entry to the museums on the 21st of every month throughout the year.

Additionally, the Museum will present a series of art history lectures on the theme “The Greek Revolution of 1821 through the visual arts” (in Greek).

We would like to announce that the restauration, renovation and conservation works that the Museum undertook last summer have now been completed. The Museum is, therefore, ready to receive the public as soon as the measures implemented by the Greek Government to safeguard public health are lifted.

The late 2020s will mark the centennial of Gounaropoulos’s house-studio. In order to maintain this important old building in the best possible condition for future generations, the Museum will undertake a series of restauration, renovation and conservation works over the summer break. These will be supplemented by conservation of the collection.

Therefore, the museum will be closed to the public from 23 June and will reopen in autumn 2020 with the launch of its new season program. In the meantime, it can be contacted by telephone or e-mail.
