G. Gounaro:
Murals
06/05/2015 - 15/10/2015

The exhibition presents the two mural projects painted by the artist G. Gounaro: the mural in the Council Chamber of the Athens City Hall and the religious paintings in the church of Hagia Triada (Holy Trinity) in Volos.

The painting in the Athens City Council covers 112m². It was created in the late 1930s and depicts the history of Athens from ancient to modern times. The work is presented for the first time in relation to the artist’s preparatory drawings, on loan from the Municipal Gallery of Athens.

The murals in the Hagia Triada church date from the early 1950s and represent the only example of a Greek church painted in modern style. The recent restoration of the murals has highlighted the poetic and spiritual qualities of the compositions.
